Book : The Damned United (2006)

Written through the eyes of Brian Clough, ‘The Damned United’ is a fictional (but based on fact) day by day musing of his short time as Manager of Leeds United.

It packs a punch right from the off, with Clough smashing up Don Revie’s old desk and chair and burning them in the West Stand car park. Not surprisingly, the players didn’t take to Cloughie and telling them they were all cheats and didn’t deserve their medals wasn’t going to build any bridges. Clough didn’t care and the book goes on to tell the tale in Clough’s (fictional) words of encounters and rifts with players, strained board meetings, and the games he took charge of. All the while we get to digest the daily negative and hateful thoughts he has towards Revie, Leeds and the players while events took place.

This book has received many excellent reviews and is quite different to most books about Leeds which makes it a good read. A film of the book is also in the making.

Book : The Who's Who of Leeds United (2008)

Who's Who is an encyclopedia of Leeds United players providing career details of every player to ever wear a Leeds shirt in a competitive match, including Leeds City and all loan players.

The author explains that it has taken decades of research to compile and it's clear no stone has been left unturned. Players are listed alphabetically and with at least a paragraph of information for each player, the book is an extremely detailed compilation. The player photos are interesting, especially the older ones and seeing the old kits from years gone by. Managers are also covered starting from 1905 with Gilbert Gillies. All the main stats are in a section at the end detailing all player's appearances, goals per competition etc.

Book : From Darkness Into White (2008)

Well they said you could write a book about it, and so someone has!

From Darkness To White is an on and off the pitch insight into the period of Leeds United history from around March 2006 when struggling in the Championship to May 2008 with the Play-off final at Wembley.

The book details the whole financial situation with the club going into administration, the CVA, Golden Share, HMRC debts etc. and later on the hearing that failed to overturn the -15 deficit.

On the pitch the book sums up the siege mentality that encompassed Elland Road during the 07/08 season, covers game by game the great start the team made in clawing back the 15 points, subsequently climbing the league, and of course reaching the Play-off Final at Wembley. As if that wasn't enough, there was of course the departure of Gus Poyet and Dennis Wise to encapsulate, along with the appointment of Gary McAallister.

Of course many of us will have been following the financial situation carefully at the time, and also watching the team and be completely wrapped up in all the goings on, however this book drills down into some more depth than most of us will have been aware of and covers some facts that will not have been made so public at the time.

Book : Doolally (Winter 2005) : Edited by David Gill, published by PDG Books Ltd

"The management feel there are strong grounds to support the view that his obsession and infatuation with Leeds United Football Club has reduced his work output to such an extent that it has rendered him a liability"

Lots of short stories on the theme of being a hardened football supporter, and in most cases features football supporting through the eyes of Leeds United Supporters. The book is a breath of fresh air amongst all the many Leeds books full of facts, figures and stats.

....and I don't see a problem either with banning red cars from the car park !

DVD : Best Of Europe (Spring 2005)

A compilation featuring Leeds in Europe spanning the Revie era to current. Its good that this is available as there are some great moments to savor, and injustices to wry over. Unfortunately though the DVD lacks passion and seems to have been put together by someone who does not understand what a Leeds Supporter would want to see in European compilation. The clips of the 1975 European Cup Final are minimal with no clips from the superb victories in the previous rounds, and there is more interview chat than action.

As the DVD progresses into more recent times with UEFA Cup and Champions League campaigns there is much more action, however each goal and near miss is replayed in slow motion 3 times, even the goals against Leeds. Some matches are covered in depth and others go completely unmentioned. I can't help but think of some of the things that could have been on the DVD instead of replays, such as Carl Shutt's goal against Stuttgart, the magnificent saves by Paul Robinson against Barcelona, the away match against Deportivo or even some match action from the Semi-Final in Valencia.

It also defies me as to why the background sequence on the menu page starts with a clip of a Stuttgart player scoring against Leeds !

Book : Where Are They Now (Summer 2005)

Where Are They Now? Life After Leeds United is now available at www.leedswherearetheynow.co.uk. Some of the feedback we have had so far.

"Fascinating book" - Eddie Gray, July 2005, "Good Little Read, you'd enjoy this" - Chris Moyles, Radio 1 DJ - July 2005

"Well the truth of the matter is my wife knows EXACTLY where I am now, I'm sat on the bog reading your book. It's absolutely riveting and I love it." - Bob Dunning, Leeds Fan - July 2005

"A footballers version of Friends ReUnited". Peter Lorimer, July 2005.

"It's quite hard to comprehend that ex-Leeds players, many who were stars, are now basically doing some quite ordinary and even mundane jobs. Who would have believed that amongst the heroes from the Revie era we now have a Postman, Market Trader and Insurance Salesman.

Not unusual to see ex-players running Pubs, Hotels and Sports Shops maybe, but a Stand Up Comic, DJ and Taxi Driver!.

Written with a sense of humour, this book is factual and entertaining. It recalls all those players you may have seen play for Leeds and possibly forgotten about. Who remembers Ken De Mange ? (now a baggage handler at Heathrow by the way). "

Book : FANTHOLOGY (Dec 2004)

Any review from me on this book would be completely bias as I (Mark Walsh) have contributed to it. All I can say is that its a great idea, a great book, and what a superb picture of Billy on the front. Here's the low-down from the publishers....

Whatever you say about Leeds United FC, it's very unlikely the words 'boring' and 'mundane' would be used. The life and times of this famous club, the fortunes and misfortunes and the trials and tribulations are unparalleled in world football. And the fans have been with them all the way. Throughout the years of world famous players, managers and amazing events, they have witnessed Leeds United history unfold.

Here, Leeds fans all over the world tell of their emotions, their tears of joy and their tears of misery in good, bad and downright ugly times with the world famous Whites. And fans of all ages reveal 'WHY' they're Leeds fans, what it is that makes them so loyal and give their reasons for nearly losing all sense of reason watching Leeds play the beautiful game.

FANTHOLOGY has enlisted a tiny percentage of Leeds fans, from all walks of life, as contributors - some famous, some not so. Amongst the contributors are: Brian Turner - Celebrity TV Chef , Ian Dennis - BBC Radio 5 journalist, Best selling writer Louise Rennison, The Independent's Phil Shaw, Football analyst Prof. Bill Gerrard, Paul Dews - chief sports writer for the Yorkshire Evening Post and James Hardy - BBC journalist.
PLUS Poets & 'Humbugs' authors Craig Bradley & David Gill, writers Tom Palmer, J R Endeacott and renowned no. 1 Leeds fan Gary Edwards of 'Paint It White' fame. ......AND, James Lee, son of a Grumbleweed!

FANTHOLOGY costs £8.95 and is available from publishers Relish Books of Leeds, the Leeds United Club Shop, and most major book retailers.

Relish Books is run by J R Endecott, author of One Northern Soul, and a Leeds United Season ticket Holder.

Book : Humbugs (2004)

Well you wouldn't think things would be too exciting working in a sweet factory in Halifax. Wrong! There's allsorts (great pun) happening.

Factory computers are getting stolen and sold off on the black market, there's sha**ing in the toilets, and a psycho worker is chasing the manager across the warehouse with a sword attempting to kill him. "He's wearing nothing but black combat pants, a Japanese rising sun bandana, and a bandage round his left arm. And he's holding this huge f***off sword."

The factory workers play for the works team Humbuggers FC on Saturdays. Training sessions take place in the factory yard at lunch times, and naturally tactics are discussed at length in the pub. "The Slubbers Arms is a bit of a rough hole. One of them old backstreet boozers that hasn't seen a lick of paint since Leeds won the cup."

On the football field, it all going badly wrong until the girls in the factory get the team into shape. There's a big game coming up against the Police team. No more head butts and fighting this time, they must be beaten, and there will be a big crowd too. And with a few wagers on the game there's even more incentive to do well. "I don't mind bunging a fiver on the Grand National but one hundred readies on a game of football. You know how many humbugs I have to make for that?"

This is a great down to earth read. Lots of great quotes and laughable recollections.

Review by Mark Walsh. Humbugs is published by Relish Books of Leeds. Buy it from Relish for £5.95

Book : Paint It White (2003)

Gary is most famous as the painter and decorator who never paints anything red, and who for free will paint over anything in red with white. "Its my mission in life to rid the world of all its red wine". I guess anyone who's seen every Leeds game since 17 Jan 1968 would have a few good stories to tell, and Gary Edwards therefore has a shed load, and he's met nearly every player too. Loads of encounters are written about of Gary's travels all over the world following Leeds. If you travel away and abroad supporting Leeds you will know its never dull and this book captures many great incidents. "I opened my bag and produced a dozen pirate hats, which we all put on, much to the amusement of the media".

Lots of humour and opinions, and down to earth stories written by a supporter for supporters, told as if you were down the pub reminiscing. Lots of name checks too for Supporters Club Branches of which Gary is a member of the Kippax Branch. This is a cracking book, thoroughly recommended.

Book : The Unforgiven (2003)

Well we all know about the great Revie years, the trophies, and the near misses, but how did it all begin. This book is a fascinating and factual insight into the days when Leeds were a struggling 2nd Division team with debts, poor attendances and coming third best in Yorkshire with a preference to Cricket and Rugby. Then Don Revie was recruited (although he nearly went to manage Bournmouth), and the Revie plan was unveiled. Bring on the kids, bring back John Charles, hold onto the best players, look after your own, and of course, play in white. The book goes on to cover the players Revie promoted through the ranks and transferred in, tactics, building the club spirit, and the great matches along the way. It frequently features reactions and quotes from manager and players relating to the glory of winning, and the pain of finishing runners up.

So who is unforgiven? Definitely Ray Tinkler the referee who didn't blow Jeff Astle offside and cost Leeds the 71 championship. "Leeds will go mad, they have every justification for going mad". Revie was never forgiven outside Leeds for being manager of a team with an unconventional style and his abandonment of the England job. Even though his record as a manger was comparable to the best. The team remain unforgiven for being ruthless and not always playing with flair, although no-one ever remembers how other teams dished it out but because Leeds won the games they got the bad press.

If you have only heard about the great Revie side, his plan, and seen clips of the goals, then this book completes the picture and allows you to recognise what a great manager he was and how far he took the club. Without him, and some financial support from local businessmen, things could have been very different.

Leeds United Memorabilia Pack (Oct ’03)

The pack comes in a sturdy box plastered with photos of the ‘glory days’ and contains 16 replica items of memorabilia from 1961-1974 : Cup Final Programmes, European Programmes, Newspaper cuttings, Souvenir booklets and Picture Cards. This is a real insight into the club and a superb way to recall the milestones achieved during the Revie years and really does allow for time to stand still. The match day programmes all cover significant games, while the 1969 and 1974 souvenir booklets feature all the players and games from the respective championship seasons and plenty of old pictures : Bremner, Gray, Charlton and Co.

The most interesting item for me being the 1966 brochure which Leeds handed to young hopefuls looking for an apprenticeship with the club. It includes plenty of behind the scene photos including the players lounge with a young Lorimer and Charlton sitting in armchairs, watching an old black and white TV and drinking coffee. The menu for the 1972 Cup Final Dinner at the Café Royale is another rare and interesting inclusion.

Book : Elland Road e:males (Dec ’03)   :  10 fans, 1 season, 1000 changing opinions.

Well most of us say what we think when writing emails about our beloved team, and this book cleverly uses email banter from a core group of supporters (including Chris Moyles) to tell the story of the 2002/3 season, from David O’Leary’s departure through to that great win against Arsenal on the last away day of the season. Full of humour, wit, anger, insider information and predictions (if only the writers knew then what we all do now), the emails don’t let up as the season unfolded.

Interestingly enough, some of the worst case scenario predictions for the season ended up being quite tame after what eventually went on, what with all the outs – Ferdinand, Keane, Fowler, Bowyer, Dacourt, Woody, and the unfurling of how much debt the club was in. One of the reasons that this book makes a good read is that we can all relate to the comments in the emails and feel the emotion they were written with. Everyone has an opinion on all the transfers, managers and finance issues and you can feel yourself agreeing with the emails much of the time and recalling the same thoughts and exasperations.

Book : One Northern Soul - Life in Leeds in the 80's written by a supporter - (Published Aug' 02)

Written by a Leeds season ticket holder about the life of a teenager growing up in Leeds in the 80's. More than just a book about supporting Leeds, its very much an 80’s nostalgia trip covering the end of the Punk era and the emergence of the New Wave bands, all the best bands get a name-check (Stranglers, Banshees, Ruts, Undertones). It also reflects on teenage nights on the pull in the Leeds clubs and pubs, encounters with the lucky ladies, and the impact of the recession and illegal quests for cash.

On the Leeds front, the book starts by reflecting on what would have been after the 1975 European Cup final “if that goal in Paris had been allowed then everything that followed could have been different”. It covers the game against West Brom when Leeds were relegated, Birmingham ‘85, and various Service Crew meets and their victims. “There was a savage roar from one man Come on Leeds, get into ‘em!”

If you grew up in the 80’s, or supported Leeds in the 80’s, or lived in Leeds in the 80’s, this book will bring back memories, and if it’s a combination of all three then all the better. Still a great book regardless. I do hope there is no fate attached to this book though. The Strangles are back with a new album this year, and Leeds are on the verge of being relegated. Sounds like the 80’s all over again.
